I think they were always evidence of a mind that could see what others missed.

A mind that noticed texture, movement, feeling, and life.

A mind that was excited and unafraid and saw adventure waiting on every hike every new place we went. Somewhere her joy was cut away and the little girl who found so much of wonder to write about, to draw about, to dream about every day, she slipped into a little crevice and has been in that alone place for a very long time.

Some bridges are not real support.
Some “help” looks like help but does not truly orient or support. I was not helpful as a parent . I was not taught the consistent skills necessary to navigate this world and I passed that unpracticed skill to my daughters.

A child should not be expected to navigate a school, a family, a road, a store, a hospital, or a court system completely alone.

Someone points.
Someone explains.
Someone translates.
Someone says, “This is where you go. This is what that means. This is what comes next.”

But somewhere along the way, once a person becomes an adult, the world often stops translating. The child, now grown up continues to navigate by instinct, some skill, some luck, mostly without a map . The world keeps turning whether you need it to slow down or not. It keeps turning and turning and we’re trying to just keep up.

It assumes orientation has already happened.
It assumes the person knows how to stand, how to ask, how to apply, how to explain, how to recover, how to belong.

And if that person was never properly oriented in childhood — or was interrupted by trauma, shame, fear, poverty, neglect, or isolation — then adulthood does not feel like freedom.

It feels like being dropped into another system with no map.

Some people are not refusing adulthood. They are stranded between systems.

They did not get to fully be children and know the safe guidance into adulthood.
And now the adult world looks at them and says, “You should know this by now.”

But knowing is not automatic.
Orientation is not automatic.
Confidence is not automatic.
Belonging is not automatic.
These things are built.

The system speaks its own language, keeps its own rhythm, follows rules ordinary people do not understand, then punishes them for not knowing how to move inside it.

And the mental-health system often works the same way.
It tells people to get help, then hides the help behind money, insurance, paperwork, waiting lists, stigma, transportation, and exhaustion.

Systems assume people are already oriented.

And the systems that should orient them often shame them instead.

I am beginning to see these posts as boards in a bridge.
Not a finished house.
Not a perfect answer.
But something to stand on while trying to repair what has been left unsupported.

Continuity helps a person understand that life is not just random events.
One day connects to the next.
One experience teaches the next.
One small pattern becomes a path.

Children need translation.

Once someone is grown, the world assumes they should already know.

There are people caught between the childhood system they never fully got to inhabit and the adult system they were never safely taught to enter.

So maybe we stop waiting for the whole system to become humane before we begin.

A bridge is not the same as rescue.

Children are rarely expected to navigate a system completely alone.

We explain playground rules.
We explain why mushrooms shouldn’t automatically be touched.
We explain how letters become words and words become meaning.

We understand instinctively that orientation matters.

A child who understands why something works moves through the world differently than a child who is only told to obey.

But somewhere along the way, many adult systems stop offering that same orientation.

Instead of guidance, people are handed procedures.
Instead of understanding, paperwork.
Instead of connection, consequences.

And if you struggle inside the structure, the problem slowly begins shifting from the human situation itself to whether you know how to properly navigate the system surrounding it.

It is difficult to explain what it feels like to walk into a system already speaking a language you were never taught.

Legal words.
Procedures.
Timelines.
Expectations.

Everyone else seems to understand where to stand, when to speak, which forms matter, which phrases carry weight.

And if you hesitate—even for a moment—you begin feeling as though the problem is not your situation, but your inability to fluently operate inside the structure itself.

The focus quietly shifts.

Not:

“What is happening to this family?”

But:

“Do these people know how to properly function inside this system?”

Without a lawyer, the legal system can begin feeling strangely “members only.”

This weekend, it started with something small.

We had just returned from the library and were walking up the driveway toward the house when my grandson, six years old, stopped beside my car.

And behavior can look fine…

even when the child is completely unsure underneath.

There’s a moment when a child enters something they don’t understand…
not knowing where to look, what connects, or how the pieces fit.

A child doesn’t walk into school thinking:

• “It’s Tuesday.”

• “Lunch is at 11:30.”

• “Follow the system.”

They’re experiencing something closer to:

• Where am I?

• What is happening?

• How do I know what comes next?

That’s not defiance.

That’s disorientation.

I saw it the first day I left my daughter at school.

When lunchtime came, she was told to sit alone at an empty table because she had brought her lunch instead of buying one.

Around her, adults moved quickly—lining kids up, directing them, managing the flow.

But no one explained anything to her.

No one mapped the space.
No one showed her where she fit.

After sitting there alone for a while, she did something incredibly brave.

She got up, walked to an adult, and asked:

“Aren’t I supposed to go with my classmates?”

There’s a moment in any system
when things start to move faster than people can follow.

It doesn’t look like failure.

It weakens first.

People can be holding the same structure…and feel completely different levels of weight.

Nobody thinks they’re lying.

They’re reacting to where they’re standing under the structure.

That’s the part that’s easy to miss.

Because from the outside, everything still appears to be working.

In fact, it can look like it’s working better than ever.

Faster results.
Quicker answers.
More output.

And that’s where the tension begins.

Not because something is breaking…
but because something is being pushed beyond what it can sustain.

We’re seeing that now in the systems we’re building.

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly.

Faster than most people can fully understand.

Some are excited by it.

Some are uneasy.

Some are trying to keep up.

But underneath that speed,
the same principles still apply.

Clarity matters.
Balance matters.
Understanding matters.

We have a tendency to compress time.

To take processes that unfold over years, generations, or longer…
and reduce them into something quicker, simpler, easier to understand.

Years ago, my oldest daughter, and I walked into the Contemporary Arts Museum here in Houston. Just inside the entrance, across from the doors, was a giant chalkboard covering nearly an entire wall.

It wasn’t graffiti. It was something different.

Visitors had been invited to leave a thought behind. The board was filled with phrases, fragments, and ideas—little traces of the minds that had passed through the museum that day. Some were playful, some reflective, some curious. Nothing crude or hateful. It felt more like a wall of wandering thoughts than anything else.

Daughter stood there reading for a moment and then turned to me.

“What should we write?”

I’ve always been someone who flips through books looking for a line that stands out—something that catches my attention and stays with me. Somewhere along the way I must have come across these words, because they came to mind in that moment as if they had been waiting there.

I said, “Write this.”

Words move minds.

So she picked up the chalk and wrote it on the board.

I don’t know if I ever took a picture of it. I might have. I’ve been thinking about going back through my photos to see if I captured that moment. But even if I didn’t, the memory stayed with me.

At the time, it just felt like one thought among many on a wall of passing ideas.

I didn’t realize then how true those words would turn out to be.

Years later, those words came back to me in an unexpected way.

This same daughter recently sent me a song called Letters From the Sky and asked me to listen closely to the lyrics. Music, for her, is a language for feelings she struggles to explain in ordinary conversation.

The song is beautiful, but it lives in a particular emotional space. It speaks about regret, unfinished conversations, and the longing to say things that were never spoken while there was still time. The voice in the song imagines messages coming from the sky—letters filled with everything that might have been said if life had unfolded differently.

Listening to it felt a little like being invited to step into a certain kind of house.

Some houses are places of rest. Others are places where sorrow has been carefully preserved, room by room, so that the past never quite loosens its grip.

Songs, stories, and even the words we repeat to ourselves can build those houses in the mind. They shape the emotional worlds we live inside. Sometimes they help us understand our past. Other times they quietly invite us to keep living inside it.

That realization brought me back to the people who shaped my own relationship with memory.

The longer I live, the more I see how true those four words really are.

Words don’t just communicate ideas. They shape the landscapes we live inside.

The books we read, the stories we repeat, the songs we return to—these things create emotional terrain. Some landscapes invite us to walk forward. Others lead us back again and again to the same place.

Growing up, I lived inside a landscape shaped largely by my mother’s memories.

She was deeply interested in family history, but the way she carried it often felt heavy. Much of what she wrote in her diaries focused on the tragedies she had experienced. Reading those pages felt less like learning history and more like stepping into a room where sorrow had been carefully preserved.

It was difficult to see her past without also seeing her as a tragic figure moving through the present.

My grandmother, however, was different.

She carried the same family history—the same losses, the same stories—but she seemed able to hold it without letting it define the emotional atmosphere around her. She was strong, practical, and steady. She took care of details, saved money carefully, and kept life moving forward.

There were tragedies in her history as well. A sister, who had been placed in an asylum at the age of 7 or so, simply because she was deaf. A baby brother who lived less than a year before disappearing from the family story except for a small letter written by a tiny little girl, (my grandmother) that still survives though little Walter disappeared. There were photographs she once tried to throw away—images my mother managed to rescue.

History was present, but it did not become a house where everyone had to live inside the sorrow.

My brother , who spent more time around our grandmother growing up, seemed to absorb that perspective. He developed a strong interest in history itself—the context, the facts, the way events fit into the wider world. But he had little patience for conversations that tried to turn history into endless emotional introspection.

In many ways, I find myself standing somewhere between those two ways of remembering.

I understand the importance of knowing where we come from. But I also know how easily memory can turn into a place where we remain too long.

Lately I’ve been thinking about emotional landscapes in a more literal way—how the paths people walk through in their lives might be represented as physical landscapes. Our inner worlds are not static. They are paths we walk.

And the words we use—whether spoken, written, or sung—help shape the direction of those paths.

Some words open doors. Others close them. Some invite us to step forward. Others encourage us to sit down and stay in the past.

The best we can do is choose our words carefully.

Because the words we leave behind—on chalkboards, in songs, in stories—do more than express what we feel. They help build the emotional landscapes that others may someday walk through.

And if we are thoughtful, the people who come after us may see those doors standing open and decide to walk through them too.

In those days, when something important broke, people tried to understand it before they replaced it.

When I look at this photograph, I see more than a damaged airplane.

I see a generation that understood how things worked because they had to repair them.

My grandfather trained pilots in Central Texas and repaired aircraft that others might have written off as lost. My father later rebuilt damaged cars the same way — taking something broken, studying how it worked, and putting it back together piece by piece.

They may not have called it “systems thinking,” but that’s exactly what it was.

If something failed, the goal wasn’t to replace it.

The goal was to understand it.

I sometimes wonder what might have been different if more of us had learned systems that way — not just with machines, but with homes, communities, and even families.

When I look at these old photographs of airplanes that crashed and were rebuilt, I’m reminded of something simple: systems fail sometimes, and the people who know how things work don’t panic—they start looking for how to repair them.

Families are a little like that too. Distance happens, misunderstandings happen, life pulls people in different directions. Sometimes we don’t know how to fix those systems right away.

Systems only survive when people understand how they work and care enough to maintain them.

What those earlier generations understood about machines is something we sometimes forget about systems in general.

Airplanes, engines, houses, and tools only keep working when someone understands how the pieces fit together.

When something fails, the goal isn’t panic or blame.
The goal is to understand the system well enough to repair it.

The same principle quietly applies to larger systems too — including the ones that hold a country together.

After writing about the custody situation in the last post, something kept sitting in the back of my mind.

When adults look at a conflict like that, we see courts, judges, hearings, legal procedures, and rules that shape what can happen next.

But children don’t see any of that.

They only see what is right in front of them.

They see the adults they love.
They see confusion.
They see separation.
And they wonder why things are happening the way they are.

To a child, the system behind the situation is invisible.

That realization made me think about something bigger.

Children spend their entire early life surrounded by systems they don’t yet understand.

The legal system.
The school system.
The grocery store.
The way food arrives in the house.
The way parents leave for work each morning.
Even the way a city works or how rules exist at all.

To a child, these things can feel random.

But they aren’t random.

They are systems.

And the truth is, most adults were never really taught to see those systems either.

We simply learned to move through them.

Which raises an interesting question:

What if we started teaching children to notice systems much earlier?

Not through lectures or civics textbooks.

But through the ordinary things they already experience every day.

Going to the grocery store.
Planting something in the garden.
Watching how a house is maintained.
Seeing how tools are used and cared for.

Children don’t need to understand government yet.

When I look around my own house now, I can see the result of that gap.

A house itself is a system.

But when there are unfinished repairs, tools scattered in different places, or parts of projects sitting around waiting to be finished, the system starts to feel chaotic instead of working smoothly.

I recognize that feeling in my own life sometimes — moving from one task to another, trying to fix one thing here and another thing there.

Looking back, I can see that if someone had shown me earlier how to think in terms of systems — how spaces, tools, maintenance, and routines all connect — things might have felt very different.

But there is a hopeful side to that realization.

Because it means it’s never too late to start showing the next generation how systems actually work.

Things work because someone understands how the system works.

When I think about where I first saw that kind of understanding, my mind goes back to my grandparents and my father.

My grandfather ran a small airport in Austin, Texas called Haile Airport where he trained pilots and rebuilt damaged aircraft.

Granddad treated his tools with respect. Everything had a place. Nothing rusted. Nothing was left scattered around.

My grandparents didn’t keep things because they couldn’t let go of them.

They kept things because they knew how to care for them.

There’s an important difference between those two ideas.

Earlier generations often saved objects because they understood how those objects fit into a working system. Glass jars stored nails and bolts. Tools were cleaned and oiled so they wouldn’t rust. Things were repaired, reused, and sometimes passed down.

Today we often see something different.

Homes filling with objects that no longer serve a purpose. Containers designed so they can’t easily be reused. Products made to be replaced instead of repaired.

What once was stewardship can start to look like clutter when the knowledge of how to maintain a system disappears.

When the knowledge of how things work fades, objects stop being tools and start becoming clutter.

Understanding that difference is part of learning how systems actually work.

My father did something similar with cars. He would buy wrecked cars at a discount and rebuild them. He served in the Airforce and developed the same sense of respect for place and tools . His garage was meticulously clean and organized no matter the project.

My first car came from one of those projects — a black 1965 Pontiac Bonneville with a red interior. It was long and loud and a little bit wild. The kind of car that made other drivers pull up next to you at a stoplight just to see what it could do.

But what stayed with me wasn’t the car itself.

It was the idea that something broken could be understood, repaired, and brought back to life.

Without realizing it, the older people in my family were teaching something important.

They were showing how systems are cared for.

Today many children spend less time around older generations who worked that way. And many of us — myself included — grew up without fully learning how to pass those habits on.

Looking back now, I wish I had spent more time helping my children simply notice how things work.

Not politics.

Not complicated ideas.

Just the systems we interact with every day.

A grocery store.
A garden.
A house.
Tools.
A car.

Yesterday I wrote about how politics often turns into a hero story.
Someone strong will fix everything. Someone bad is ruining everything.

But when we step back and look closely, we begin to see something else:

Children were pulled from routines they loved.

But because the system began moving before the adults understood how it worked.

The Problem Most Parents Never Learn

Family law is not built around emotion.

Advertising learned something decades ago.

Repeat a message often enough and it starts to feel familiar.
And familiar begins to feel true.

Politics sometimes uses the same trick.

Slogans and narratives get repeated until they become the framework people use to interpret everything else.

Civic literacy interrupts that cycle.

When you understand how institutions work—
how laws move,
what offices actually control,
and where power is limited—

the repetition loses its grip.

The noise fades.

The structure underneath becomes visible.

Games make systems visible and interesting.

People willingly spend hours learning rules, maps, characters, and strategies in a game—but when the same idea appears in government, it’s presented like a dry civics lecture.

What If We Looked at Government the Way People Learn Games?

Think about how people approach a popular online game.

Nobody just jumps in and randomly presses buttons.

Players quickly start asking practical questions:

• What are the rules of the game?

• What does each character actually do?

• Where are the obstacles?

• What moves gain points and which ones cost you?

• Who has special abilities and who doesn’t?

Players study the map.
They learn the environment.
They learn what actions actually change the outcome.

And the players who understand the system best usually win.

Now imagine if citizens approached government the same way.

Instead of asking only:

“Do I like this candidate?”

People might start asking:

• What powers does this office actually have?

• What part of the system does this person control?

• Who else can block or influence those decisions?

• What part of the process actually moves the result?

Suddenly politics stops looking like a story about heroes.

Identity is not a fixed truth.

I wrote this today because I am trying to understand what key my eldest daughter needs, and how to place it gently into her hand. She is moving through a painful separation, a sudden vacuum in the structure of her days. Music — which has always been her way of speaking — is both her refuge and her echo chamber. She wants to share the songs that are carrying her right now, and I recognize that she needs me to hear her through the music that resonates with her…, But I also know what music did to my own early, unguarded years — how easily lyrics became architecture for emotions. I didn’t yet have the language to question how they could turn feeling into drama and drama into identity.

I am also trying to understand what is happening inside the songs she sends me. I know now that they affect me differently because I no longer accept the message — or the authority of the messenger — in the same way. What once felt like truth now reveals itself as a kind of emotional script: fragility language, static pain language, isolation framed as identity, endurance without movement. The melody carries it in so gently that it can feel like comfort, but underneath it is often misery shaped into something repeatable and marketable — a feeling placed on a stick and sold back to us as recognition.

When I spoke to AI about two of the songs she shared — Keep Fighting and Another Love — it helped me see the pattern rather than the performance. One key after another: how the lyrics hold the listener in a closed loop, how the pain is named but not transformed, how the voice asks us to stay inside the wound rather than step beyond it. Once I saw that structure, I couldn’t unsee it. The spell was broken — not because the feeling isn’t real, but because I could recognize the framing.

This is why music with words affects me so strongly now. It enters through language, and language builds architecture inside the body. I spent years letting those structures form without question. I can’t do that anymore. It isn’t rejection; it’s the same kind of care that makes me place the needles high on their magnet — not to discard them, but to handle them consciously.

I find myself drawn instead to music without lyrics, or to music where the words are not carrying a diminished view of what it means to be human — especially what it means to be a woman. Without that contamination, sound returns to what it first was for me: movement, atmosphere, breath, and space. A place where feeling can exist without being told what it is supposed to mean.

And so my work, with her and with myself, is to find the key that allows us to share what we feel without asking either of us to step back into a language that no longer holds us.

Here is the pattern. Now I can see it.

When I step back now and listen beneath the melody, this is the language I hear:

pain that is named but never allowed to move
endurance offered as the only form of strength
love that survives only in its absence
a self defined by what has been taken
a voice waiting to be rescued but never stepping toward its own light
fragility repeated until it hardens into identity
isolation that begins to sound like home

Once I could hear this pattern, the spell loosened. The songs did not change — but my place inside them did. I am no longer standing in the center of that architecture. I am standing outside it, holding a key.

This is the key I am trying, gently, to place in my daughter’s hand — not to take away the music that carries her through these days, but to offer her a way to hear it without being enclosed by it. The thread continues, not by refusing what we feel, but by learning the language that shapes it.

And so Day 53 is not a return to where I was, but the quiet opening of another door — one where sound, memory, and voice can exist without asking me to surrender the ground I have learned to stand on.

In this I hear an echo of what Leonard Shlain wrote in The Goddess and the Alphabet — that language quietly builds the structures through which we experience reality — and what Malcolm Gladwell describes in Blink: that so much of what moves us is already at work beneath our awareness, long before we believe we have made a conscious choice. To recognize the pattern is not to reject the feeling, but to see the frame that holds it

The Empty Fair

There’s a phrase that’s been circling lately — “You can’t diversify the economy when the government punishes innovation.”
It sounds like a talking point, but under it lies a quiet truth: you can’t diversify anything — not a business, not a community, not even a culture — when fear becomes policy.

Because innovation is more than technology or profit. It’s participation. It’s the courage to show up, to try something new, to mingle with unfamiliar ideas. And right now, that courage feels under siege in places that once prided themselves on their independence.

🏟️ The Fair That Feels Empty

They say the Texas State Fair — once the beating heart of autumn in Dallas — now feels empty.
Social media videos show sparse crowds on Main Street, quiet corners of the Midway, and concessions sitting idle. Vendors admit early days have been “sluggish,” and whispers of discouraged visitors swirl.

Yet the official numbers from last year tell a different story: nearly 2.4 million visitors over 24 days. The contrast between what people feel and what records report is the fissure where fear works its magic.

Because here’s the thing — the fear of emptiness can become a prophecy itself.
If people expect decline, they may hold back, skip the event, or avoid their usual roles as participants, contributors, creators. That retreat tightens the spiral. And so a space can begin to empty — not because it was destined to, but because it was whispered into existence by doubt, exclusion, or hostility.

In a sense, the fair becomes a metaphor for the larger ecosystem: you can’t claim pride in a place, in a community, in an economy — and then make people afraid to show up. Innovation, in culture or commerce, requires presence. It grows in crowded rooms, in messy collaboration, in contested spaces. But when the backdrop is tension — ICE fears, economic exclusion, or punitive sentiment — people shrink away. The space empties out.

That’s the wound we should name: not just that structures falter, but that people’s courage to occupy them falters. And when imagination stops showing up, the hollow becomes inevitable — because it was invited.

🌾 From Oil to Openness

Texas once thrived because it refused to be just one thing. Oil may have built its backbone, but people — often immigrants, dreamers, and risk-takers — built its rhythm. From food trucks and music festivals to tech start-ups and art collectives, the energy of innovation has always come from those unafraid to cross lines.

But when leadership builds walls instead of bridges, when “difference” becomes a liability, the creative current slows. You can’t have progress without diversity, and you can’t have diversity without safety — not just physical safety, but emotional safety, the freedom to exist without fear of being hunted, harassed, or humiliated.

That’s what we lose when fear becomes the organizing principle. The economy doesn’t collapse overnight; it thins out. Like a fairground after closing, the lights are still on, but the spirit is gone.

🔄 Reclaiming the Crowd

If the fear of emptiness can become a prophecy, then so can the hope of return.
Each time someone decides to show up — to sing, to sell, to dance, to eat, to risk being visible — the spell weakens.
The fair fills again, not with noise for its own sake, but with proof of life.

Because a nation, a fair, or a community isn’t held together by spectacle or slogans. It’s held together by people’s willingness to keep showing up — to fill the spaces that fear tried to empty.

In the golden age of television, the formula was simple: introduce a powerful man with swagger, let him break the rules, dominate the room, humiliate the weak, and still walk off as the misunderstood genius. He was often cast as the antihero—flawed, but magnetic. The audience wasn’t meant to love him, but they did anyway.

Then came Trump.

The danger isn’t in obvious evil. It’s in evil that masquerades as good.

He didn’t emerge from politics—he emerged from television. The Apprentice didn’t just entertain; it conditioned. It repeated a single storyline: strength means control, firing people is leadership, and empathy is weakness. Over time, that repetition rewired public perception. The line between entertainment and governance blurred.

By the time Trump ran for president, his viewers already knew the role. And many cheered—not because he had policy solutions—but because he had presence. They mistook familiarity for trust. Repetition had done its work.

Even now, with indictments, lies, and clear abuse of power, many still see him as the misunderstood protagonist. The plot twists are obvious, but the illusion holds because it’s on repeat. Just like a rerun, the brain fills in the gaps, remembers the punchlines, and forgets the consequences.

But here’s the truth: just because something is replayed doesn't make it real. Just because a character dominates the screen doesn’t mean he deserves the stage. America isn’t a show, and we don’t need to keep watching the same tired arc.

We need new scripts, new characters, and new definitions of strength

Inversion as Repetition: When Evil Poses as Light

In scripture, there are repeated warnings that evil won’t always look evil. That deception doesn’t come with horns and fangs—but with charisma, comfort, and confidence. The line often cited:

“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)

That idea—evil presenting itself as good—has been internalized by many as a kind of alert system. But here's the twist: that warning itself has been weaponized. It’s been repeated so often, without reflection, that now many people expect goodness to be soft and evil to be bold. And in a media world that rewards spectacle, boldness gets mistaken for truth.

So what happens?

Trump acts like the villain we’ve been taught to fear—arrogant, crude, vindictive, obsessed with power—but because he performs it so openly, some take it as honesty.
Because he “tells it like it is,” they assume he must be the real thing—raw, unsanitized truth. And because traditional institutions (government, media, science) are increasingly framed as suspicious or corrupt, the loudest disruptor gets rebranded as the savior.

This is the inversion:

• The destroyer is seen as the purifier.

• The abuser becomes the protector.

• The conman is cast as the truth-teller.

• The villain becomes the misunderstood hero.

And this illusion works because it repeats. It’s not a one-time trick. It’s reinforced across rallies, headlines, memes, sermons, and screens. Each time the story is retold—each rerun of the illusion—the pattern digs deeper.
