They are red, blue, yellow, green. They are crewmates or impostors. They are witnesses, suspects, helpers, saboteurs. We identify them by color, role and action rather than by whether they are a he or a she.

And we accept this surprisingly quickly.

We do not spend much time wondering whether the red crewmate is male or female. We say, “Red was in Electrical,” or “Blue followed me,” or “It was not green.”

Within minutes, we have adjusted to a different way of describing people—or, at least, the little beings representing people.

We accept it because those are the rules of the world we have entered.

That may help explain something I was trying to put into words yesterday when I talked about using we while describing work that an artificial intelligence and I had done together.

For some people, using unfamiliar pronouns—or referring to something without first placing it into the familiar categories of he, she, man or woman—can be deeply unsettling. It is not particularly unsettling to me, although it can feel awkward. My mind may need a moment to readjust.

It feels a little like changing languages. The thought may be clear, but the words do not arrive through their usual pathways.

Yet in a game, we make that adjustment almost without noticing.

Perhaps that is because a game tells us in advance that we are entering a constructed world. We expect its rules to be different.

A game establishes who the players are. It determines what each player is allowed to know, what actions are possible, what actions are forbidden and what counts as winning.

The rules do not merely control the game.

The rules create the world in which the game can exist.

That is one reason games have become important in the development and study of artificial intelligence.

A game gives researchers a contained environment. It has boundaries, identifiable actions and measurable results. An AI agent can try something, observe what happens, adjust its behavior and try again. It can play far more rounds than any human could reasonably play and gradually discover which choices bring it closer to its assigned goal.

But the researchers do not always teach the AI every strategy it eventually uses.

They may provide the environment, the permitted actions and the goal. Then the AI begins discovering ways to operate within those boundaries.

In one OpenAI experiment, artificial agents played a simulated game of hide-and-seek. The hiders were rewarded for remaining out of sight; the seekers were rewarded for finding them. Objects such as boxes and ramps were placed inside the environment, but the agents were not specifically rewarded for using those objects.

Nevertheless, they began moving boxes to build shelters. The seekers developed counterstrategies. The hiders responded with new strategies of their own. Eventually, the agents found uses for parts of the environment that the researchers had not deliberately taught them—and, in some cases, had not expected the environment to support.

The rules were simple.

What emerged inside them was not.

Researchers have also created simplified versions of Among Us to study whether AI agents can understand assigned roles, cooperate with teammates, communicate partial information, identify an impostor and persuade other players to act.

One research team trained language-model agents to have discussions without first giving them examples of human players conducting those conversations. The agents began accusing suspects and presenting evidence based on what they had observed.

Other researchers have used Among Us as a controlled setting for examining deception. They gave AI agents the game rules and assigned some of them the role of impostor. The impostor’s goal required avoiding detection.

The researchers were not simply asking, “Can this model tell a lie?”

They were asking whether deceptive strategies would arise when misleading the other players became useful for achieving the assigned goal.

That distinction matters.

The AI does not have to hate the crewmates. It does not need to feel greedy, frightened or guilty. It has been given a role, a set of available actions and an objective. Deception can emerge as a strategy because the structure of the game makes deception useful.

That does not mean every AI system was trained by playing Among Us, nor does it mean an AI playing an impostor role secretly wants to deceive people outside the game. Researchers use games partly because potentially troubling behavior can be observed within a controlled setting.

Still, the results raise an important question.

If we create the rules, define the roles and decide what will be rewarded, how much responsibility do we bear for the strategies that emerge?

A rule does not merely prevent certain behavior. It creates pressure toward other behavior.

If cooperation is rewarded, players learn to cooperate.

If speed is rewarded, they learn to move quickly.

If winning requires concealment, they may learn to conceal.

If deception works, they may learn to deceive.

This is true of artificial intelligence, but it is not entirely foreign to human beings.

Games have always trained us too.

Children learn to take turns, follow sequences, recognize patterns, form teams, negotiate disagreements and tolerate losing. They also learn that some games reward aggression, some reward patience, some reward cooperation and some require one player to mislead another.

Beyond games, we live inside systems of rules that we did not personally create. Those systems assign names, positions and categories. They influence what we notice, what we overlook and what we understand as normal.

Most of the time, we become so accustomed to the rules that we stop seeing them as rules at all.

They begin to feel like reality itself.

Perhaps that is why a small change in language can feel so disruptive. It does not merely substitute one word for another. It briefly reveals that the categories we use are part of a system—and that another system is possible.

In Among Us, we readily enter a world where a being can simply be purple.

We accept that purple may be a crewmate, an impostor, a witness or a suspect. We listen to what purple says. We watch what purple does. We decide whether purple can be trusted.

Then the game ends, and we return to a world whose rules feel less visible because we have been living within them for so long.

Artificial intelligence may learn remarkably complicated behavior inside the rules it is given. But perhaps the deeper test of intelligence—human or artificial—is not simply learning how to succeed within a system.

It is recognizing that the system was created.

It is asking who wrote its rules, what they chose to reward and whom those rules serve.

And it is understanding that winning inside a particular set of rules is not always the same thing as doing what is right.

The rules make the world.

But awareness may be what allows us to step outside it long enough to see what has been made.

It looked like a tiny space alien wearing goggles. My son has placed these characters in different spots around the house, and I knew they came from a game, although I couldn’t remember which one.

The game is Among Us.

That led me somewhere unexpected: to the rules of democracy and the difference between participating in a system and learning how to exploit it.

In *Among Us*, the Impostor looks like everyone else while quietly sabotaging the ship and encouraging the Crewmates to distrust one another. A country, however, is not a game board. Its citizens are not pieces, and the damage does not disappear when the round ends.

Then I remembered my grandmother’s Jokers.

After she died, I came across a collection of Joker cards she had saved from different decks. I never asked her why. I don’t think I even knew about the collection while she was alive.

She played bridge, and bridge is played with a standard 52-card deck without the Jokers. Perhaps she removed them before playing and simply couldn’t bring herself to throw them away. Perhaps she liked their different artistic designs. Perhaps she thought the cards might be useful later for another game.

As we get older, we sometimes begin looking back along the path and noticing the objects scattered behind us. A stack of Jokers. An old instruction sheet. A tiny purple sticker on a wall.

Things that once seemed insignificant begin to look like clues.

Every game creates a miniature system. The rules determine what each player may do, what counts as fair play, what behavior is rewarded and how someone wins. Change one rule, and the same people may begin behaving very differently.

That may be what originally fascinated me about collecting instructions from games.

In Among Us, most of the players are Crewmates. They move around a spaceship completing tasks and trying to keep it operating. But one or more players are secretly Impostors.

The Impostor looks like everybody else.

He pretends to complete the same tasks while quietly sabotaging the ship. His success depends not only upon what he does, but upon his ability to create confusion about what everyone else is doing. Crewmates begin questioning one another. Innocent players may be accused and removed while the real Impostor remains among them.

The game’s creators call it a game of “teamwork and betrayal.”

That brought me back to the trail I followed in my previous posts: from an ordinary IRS page to a taxpayer-supported program bearing the sitting president’s name—“Trump Accounts.”

Congress authorized the name. The Treasury and IRS implemented the program. Designers created the presentation. Each individual step may be explained as part of an official process.

But that is precisely what makes the larger question important.

A person does not always have to stand outside a system to change its purpose. Sometimes he learns where the system is vulnerable. He discovers which customs depend upon restraint rather than written prohibition. He finds out how much can be normalized if every individual step appears official.

In my view, that is where the comparison to Donald Trump and the Among Us Impostor becomes useful.

It is not simply that I disagree with his politics. It is that he repeatedly presents public institutions, public attention and even public benefits as extensions of his personal identity. A taxpayer-funded program can begin to look like a gift bearing one man’s name rather than something created and paid for collectively by the American people.

The camouflage is not necessarily secrecy.

Sometimes the camouflage is official approval.

If Congress passed it, the agency displayed it and professional designers made it attractive, people may assume there is nothing left to question. But following a sequence of authorized steps does not automatically answer whether the result is healthy for a democracy.

The deeper question is not only, “Was this move allowed?”

It is also, “What is happening to the purpose of the system?”

Games have rulebooks. Democracies have constitutions, laws, traditions, ethical boundaries and expectations of public service. Yet both depend upon people understanding the difference between participating in a system and exploiting it.

A country, however, is not a game board. Its citizens are not pieces, and damage does not disappear when the round ends.

Perhaps that is also why I have been thinking more carefully about the children in front of me.

When a child is disruptive at school, adults naturally look for the rule that was broken or the label that might explain the behavior. ADHD may be real, but a diagnosis—or the possibility of one—does not explain every moment of a child’s life. There is no single test for ADHD, and anxiety, sleep difficulties, learning problems and traumatic stress can sometimes resemble or intensify attention and behavior difficulties.

How many children are also carrying custody disputes, conflict between parents, economic pressure, abrupt changes, fear or instability into the classroom?

The humane question is not, “Which label wins?”

It is, “What is this child carrying?”

I have taken some time away from work so I can be available if my grandson has difficulty at school and needs someone to get him. In the past, interruptions often frustrated me. I would try to capture a portion of the morning for myself and resent being pulled away from whatever I had planned.

Now his mother is handling the school mornings. She gets the children dressed and out the door. This morning, they even made their beds. Yesterday she cleaned out her car, and the timing turned out to be perfect: when she drove the children to the bus stop, their friends wanted to climb inside.

These are small things.

But perhaps small things are where a functioning system becomes visible. Someone takes responsibility for one part, giving someone else room to carry another. Life does not become perfectly orderly, but the roles begin to fit together differently.

Not every interruption is sabotage. Sometimes it is information. Sometimes it tells us that a person—or an entire family—needs more support.

The older I become, the more valuable it feels to stop and examine what I once passed without noticing: my grandmother’s Jokers, the instructions from an old game, a sticker placed on a wall, a child’s difficult day or a president’s name attached to a public benefit.

Each one asks us to look again.

Who wrote the rules?

Who is keeping the ship running?

Who benefits when the rules are bent?

And what are we failing to see because we are rushing to get through the day?

Perhaps a presence of mind begins there—not with immediately knowing the answer, but with recognizing the small object in our path and pausing long enough to ask why it matters.

Yesterday, I wrote about something I encountered while trying to access ordinary information on the IRS website.

Displayed alongside tax records, payment information, and other taxpayer services was a prominent advertisement for Trump Accounts—a taxpayer-funded children’s savings program carrying the sitting president’s personal name.

After I published the post, a reader left this comment:

“Now go look at who is admin for that Trump website and follow the story from there. It’s disturbing.”

The word admin could have meant several things.

Who administers the financial program?

Who administers the government website?

Who designed the website and decided how the program would be presented to the public?

I began following those different trails.

Four paths from the U.S. Capitol, Treasury, an IRS tax form and a government design desk converge at a leafy tree marked “Trump Accounts,” with dark, damaged roots exposed below.

They do not all describe the same government function. Congress created the program and placed the name “Trump accounts” into the tax code. The IRS handles enrollment through Form 4547. The Treasury Department oversees the initial accounts and says it retains control over the application and its operations. BNY serves as a financial agent, while Robinhood serves as the initial trustee and brokerage provider.

But then there is the public-facing website—the part that determines what citizens see, what words they encounter, and what associations form before they have examined any of those administrative details.

At the bottom of TrumpAccounts.gov is a credit:

“Designed in DC by National Design Studio.”

I had never heard of the National Design Studio.

It sounds like an independent design firm or perhaps a longstanding government agency.

It is neither.

President Donald Trump created the National Design Studio by executive order on August 21, 2025. It was placed inside the White House Office of the Executive Office of the President. Its administrator reports to the Office of the White House chief of staff.

The executive order describes its mission as improving the appearance and usability of federal services. Government websites are often outdated, confusing, and unnecessarily difficult to navigate, so that purpose could certainly serve the public.

Making government easier to use is a worthwhile goal.

But design is not limited to making buttons easier to find.

Design also determines what receives emphasis. It decides what words are repeated, whose image appears, who receives credit, and how people understand the relationship between a service and the institution providing it.

The National Design Studio says it is changing how Americans “experience their government.” Its website lists its featured projects. Among them are:

Trump Accounts.

TrumpRx.

These are not campaign websites. They are government projects carrying the personal name of the sitting president, designed through an office he created inside the White House.

That is where the trails begin to converge.

One trail begins with Congress placing Trump’s name into the tax code.

Another runs through the IRS, where the program appears alongside the ordinary information taxpayers must access.

Another runs through the Treasury Department, which oversees the program and retains control of its application and operations.

And the public-branding trail leads directly to a design office created inside the Trump White House.

Each institution performs a different function. That distinction matters, and I do not want to erase it merely to make the story sound simpler.

But the cumulative effect also matters.

At every stage, the citizen encounters the same name:

Trump.

The name of the president becomes the name of the public benefit. The name of the public benefit becomes a government web address. The web address leads to a website designed by a White House office. The website presents money from the U.S. Treasury through a program branded around the individual occupying the presidency.

The federal government and the president begin to feel less like separate things.

That is the disturbing point where the trails converge.

We do not need access to anyone’s private thoughts to establish that this branding is intentional. The National Design Studio employs professional designers, engineers, writers, and branding specialists. Its purpose is to shape how Americans experience public services.

The choices may be defended as effective communication. They may be described as celebrating a president’s policy achievement. But they are still choices—and they confer a clear political benefit.

A taxpayer-funded benefit is repeatedly associated with one political leader’s personal identity.

This is different from accurately saying:

“President Trump signed the legislation that created this program.”

That describes his governmental role.

Naming the program, the form, the website, and the public experience after him does something more. It incorporates the president’s personal brand into the machinery of government.

Another reader responded to yesterday’s post by mentioning our three branches of government and the checks and balances that are supposed to prevent abuses of power.

That raises the next difficult question.

Checks and balances do not function automatically merely because they are written into our constitutional structure. They depend on officials within each branch being willing to preserve the distinction between loyalty to a person and responsibility to a public institution.

Following the trails tells us where these decisions lead.

The image of a tree helps us see what their convergence may do to the larger structure.

The Constitution is often represented as a tree with three branches. But a tree is not necessarily healthy simply because all three branches remain visible and their leaves remain green.

Roots can be cut, compressed, or redirected. Water can be forced into channels that serve a structure imposed around the tree rather than the living system beneath it. Rot can begin where the branches join the trunk, long before the damage becomes visible in the leaves.

Our government can weaken in much the same way.

Congress, the executive, and the courts can all retain their names and outward forms. But their protective function depends upon the people inside them remaining willing to exercise independent judgment.

We cannot honestly claim that every official in every branch is controlled by one person. But we can recognize particular moments when branches are reinforcing presidential power rather than checking it.

In this case, Congress placed the president’s name into the law. The executive branch administers the resulting program. A design office inside the White House then built the public experience around that personal brand.

The branches remain visible.

The question is what is happening where they join the trunk.

The three green branches represent the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government—still recognizable and outwardly alive. The Trump Accounts plate and tightening gold band represent a personal political brand being fastened around their shared governmental structure. The cut roots, concrete channels, pooled water, and beginning decay represent institutional independence being redirected or weakened before the damage necessarily appears in the leaves.

This does not prove that every person involved shares the same motive. It does not, by itself, establish that a law was broken.

But it does show how institutional boundaries can become blurred without being formally erased.

The public does not wake up one morning to discover that the government and its leader have suddenly become indistinguishable.

It happens through accumulation.

A name.

A logo.

A web address.

A photograph.

A repeated phrase.

A public benefit presented through a personal brand.

Each decision can be defended separately. The larger pattern becomes visible only when we follow the trails—and then step back far enough to see what they are doing to the tree.

When several trails lead toward the same concentration of identity and power, we should not look away simply because each individual step was professionally designed.

The branches may remain visible.

The leaves may still be green.

We should still pay attention to what is happening where they join the trunk.

Today I went to the IRS website because I was trying to deal with my own taxes. On the homepage, I saw something I did not expect to see on a supposedly nonpartisan government website:

Trump Accounts.

Not “children’s savings accounts.”
Not “Section 530A accounts.”
Not even “Treasury children’s investment accounts.”

Trump Accounts.

The IRS advertisement directed people to a separate government website: TrumpAccounts.gov.

At first, I wondered how a federal agency responsible for administering our tax laws impartially could be used to promote a government program under the sitting president’s personal name.

Then I learned that Congress itself placed the name “Trump accounts” into Section 530A of the Internal Revenue Code. That may make the use of the name legally defensible. The IRS can say it is simply administering a program under the name Congress gave it.

But then I discovered something more troubling.

An earlier promotional description associated with TrumpAccounts.gov stated:

“Trump Accounts provide eligible American children with tax-advantaged investment accounts courtesy of President Donald J. Trump.”

The same wording was also circulated by official government social-media accounts, including the United States Department of Education.

Courtesy of President Donald J. Trump?

No.

The $1,000 placed into these accounts does not come from Donald Trump’s personal bank account. It is not a personal gift from him. It is federal money authorized through legislation passed by Congress.

In other words, it comes from the United States Treasury—and ultimately from the American public.

The earlier wording was deceptive in its effect because it encouraged people to associate a taxpayer-funded benefit personally with Donald Trump. It made government money sound like presidential generosity.

The current TrumpAccounts.gov website no longer uses the phrase “courtesy of President Donald J. Trump.” It now says:

“With $1,000 from the U.S. Treasury, your child has a huge head start on the American dream.”

That wording is more accurate.

We can establish that the language changed. What we cannot establish from the public information presently available is why it changed. Perhaps officials recognized that “courtesy of President Donald J. Trump” was misleading or politically problematic. Perhaps the website was simply redesigned for the program’s full launch. Without internal records or an official explanation, we should not claim to know their motive.

But the change itself matters.

First, the public was shown language crediting Trump personally.

Later, that language was replaced with wording identifying the actual source: the U.S. Treasury.

This is the kind of thing I want to begin noticing more carefully—not only outright falsehoods, but the slow twisting of language.

A government does not always have to tell people, “The president personally gave you this money.” It can create that impression more subtly:

• Put his name on the benefit.

• Repeat his name on the IRS homepage.

• Create a government domain bearing his name.

• Describe taxpayer-funded money as being “courtesy of” him.

• Place his photograph and personal quotation prominently on the official website.

Each choice reinforces the same message: This came from him.

But it did not come from him.

A president can support legislation. A president can sign legislation. A president can advocate for a program and take political credit for helping enact it.

But a president should not be presented as the personal provider of money belonging to the American people.

There is an important difference between saying:

“President Trump signed the law that created these accounts.”

and saying:

“These accounts are courtesy of President Trump.”

The first describes a governmental action. The second transforms public money into a personal favor.

That distinction may seem small. It is not.

Language shapes how people understand power. When taxpayer-funded programs are branded as gifts from an individual leader, citizens may gradually stop seeing the government as an institution that belongs to them. Instead, they may begin seeing public benefits as favors bestowed by the person in charge.

That is why I am paying attention.

Not because every use of a president’s name is automatically illegal. Not because noticing propaganda requires exaggerating what the evidence proves.

I am paying attention because words matter—and because government money is not the president’s money.

It is ours.

How do I step outside of chaos and sadness long enough to survive it? What place must I get to where the chaos that is happening around me, can’t swallow me up. A place where I can still see what’s happening, still feel the weight of it, still care deeply—but, where I am less likely to be swept away by it.

There are times when too many things are alive in my mind at one time. Where standing behind a glass window looking out or looking in, either view brings clarity , however glass is no match for a storm. I tell Chat gpt that I need a place in my mind to switch to. A place where I can notice the patterns, ask better questions, and decide what to do next. A view from a glass window is not a safe perspective for obvious reasons.

In this conversation I ask AI to come up with something other than the window perspective as a view away from the center of the storm. Chat knows that I like metaphors so it provided other more sensible suggestions for me to take my mind to.

1. The Lookout Above the Storm

A person standing on a rocky rise or lookout tower while a storm moves across the valley below. They are not untouched—their coat is blowing, the sky is dark—but they can see the roads, the flooding, and the direction of the storm.

This is probably the clearest image for the piece.

2. Climbing Toward Higher Ground

A person moving up a steep path while rain and floodwater gather below. The emphasis is not on escape, but on gaining enough elevation to see and think.

This gives the post more movement and determination.

3. A Map Spread Out at a Storm Shelter

A person at a sturdy wooden table on high ground, looking at a map while the storm remains visible through an open doorway. The storm is still real, but the person is now planning.

This connects beautifully with the analytical questions in the post:
“What is happening? What repeats? What do I do next?”

4. The Lighthouse Keeper

A lighthouse on a cliff in severe weather, with someone inside watching the sea and keeping the light going. The lighthouse does not stop the storm. It helps maintain direction.

This is more poetic and could work very well for Substack.

5. One Footing Stone Above Floodwater

A close, simple image: solid stones rising above rushing water, with one person carefully stepping upward. The water represents sadness; the stones represent naming, observing, understanding, and deciding.

This would be a strong, simple illustration rather than a detailed scene.

6. The Storm Seen from a Mountain Ridge

A wide landscape image where someone stands on a ridge, watching lightning and rain below. There is no shelter around them. The meaning is simply: higher ground gives perspective, not immunity.

The one that resonated for me described climbing toward higher ground.

I have one daughter trying to keep moving forward while everything she does seems to be questioned or pushed

One daughter who has withdrawn so far into depression that it can feel as though she has given up on having a life of her own.

One daughter beginning again in a new home, while old dangers still seem close behind her.

A son who parks his car on the street so that others can use the driveway. Who after I scratched his car by accident, just treats is as no big deal so I won’t feel so bad. Same son who just did a creative fix after having had his bumper ripped off when it caught on a water hose I left in a bad location. Even then ,he just treated it as no big deal. The same son who is very private about his personal life and seldom expresses anything other than positive energy for everyone around him even though I know he suffers quietly.

A son who repairs around the house those tasks that can’t wait because he has acquired through years of trial, error, and problem-solving to know what to do, and we let him.

These are my children and my heart is tied directly to each of them.

Then there’s the house and the animals where the repairs and the tending is everyday..

Added to these pulls on my mind there is the outside work for pay with no end in sight.

All the people and creatures I love, each carrying a need I cannot completely answer in that moment, but that I feel responsible for .

When all of it gathers at once, my mind begins to treat every concern as an emergency. Sadness doesn’t just arrive one piece at a time. It arrives as a whole weather system.

I’ve noticed that sometimes the only way I can step out of it is by doing one simple, physical task.

There repeated, familiar work gives my mind a place to focus on a need that isn’t complicated or emotionally wrenching.

Perhaps that’s part of the wisdom behind daily cleaning habits found in Japanese homes, schools, and traditions: the same small actions done again and again, not because life is perfectly ordered, but because the act of tending to one small area restores a little order inside us as well.

The task doesn’t erase the sadness.

It doesn’t mean the other problems no longer matter.

But for a few minutes, my mind is no longer falling through every fear at once.

My hands know what to do.

One surface becomes clear.

One corner becomes calmer.

And sometimes that small piece of order becomes a foothold.

From there, I’m able to think again.

This is what I mean by higher ground.

It’s not abandoning the people we love.

It’s not becoming less concerned.

It’s not pretending the storm has passed.

Sometimes higher ground is a new way of thinking.

And sometimes it begins with a cloth, a sink, a floor, or a single room brought quietly back into order.

People were trying on clothes. Holding shirts up to themselves. Looking in mirrors. Turning slightly to see how something fit. A woman in front of me had put on a little vest and turned around, almost asking without asking, What do you think?

It was such a normal human moment.

And yet it felt surreal.

Because all at once I could see how much of life is spent asking some version of that same question:

How do I look in this?
Do I belong in this?
Is this me?
Is this what I am supposed to wear?

We think of clothing as personal choice, and sometimes it is. But clothing is also signal. It tells the world something before we speak.

Even the way I dress is a kind of signal, though I have usually thought of it as the opposite. I wear blue jeans every day. I wear the same kind of comfortable shoes with no designs, no frills, and when I find a cheap pair that works, I buy two or three because I know they may not be there later and it eliminates the decision to hunt down a new pair. Outdoors I still prefer bare feet so that I can feel the ground. I wear loose shirts, white or off-white partly because I work in paint and small stains can usually be dealt with using the same paint. It keeps a good shirt from feeling ruined too quickly. But it’s more than practical. It eliminates a daily decision. Less clothing decisions… less mental clutter. A little more space for my brain to rest.

Maybe it’s the simplicity. Maybe it’s the modesty. Maybe it’s the quietness of it. Maybe somewhere in my mind it connects to monks, or Eastern philosophy, or the image of people dressed in a way that seemed composed and not asking to be looked at.

But I was not always this way.

When I was young, I wore cutoff shorts and T-shirts. I was often barefoot. I dressed for heat, movement, comfort, and freedom. I wasn’t trying to look like anything. I wasn’t trying to invite attention. I was just trying to be outside, to be comfortable, to move through the world and without the attention on me.

But the world does not always let girls belong to themselves.

At some point, I began to notice that my comfort was being read by other people as something else. Attention came that I didn’t ask for. Men looked too long. Older men mistook maturity for permission. What had felt like freedom started to feel invaded.

Later, life took me into other kinds of rooms, other kinds of work, other kinds of survival. There were years when clothing and appearance had a different purpose because money was needed and children had to be cared for. I don’t say that with shame. I say it because women’s lives are often more complicated than the simple stories people want to tell about them.

So maybe now I’ve gone in the other direction.

Not toward darkness. Not toward hiding. Not toward punishing myself for having a body. I still wear light clothes. I still wear blue jeans, because jeans have always felt like freedom to me — practical, ordinary, durable, unpretentious. I can sit on the floor. I can move. I can work. I can disappear a little without disappearing completely.

My clothes now are not a rejection of beauty. They are a refusal to be consumed by performance.

For a person of sincere faith, that music might feel comforting. Familiar. Safe.

But I also thought about how powerful background messages can be.

Not just music in a store, but all the background messages we grow up inside.

The songs.
The sayings.
The family rules.
The church rules.
The political slogans.
The gender roles.
The idea of who should lead and who should submit.
The idea of who is respectable and who is dangerous.
The idea of who is competent and who is only there because someone “gave” them something.

That’s where culture becomes more than culture.

It becomes clothing for the mind.

And often we don’t choose it consciously. We inherit it. We are dressed in it long before we know how to ask whether it fits.

Religion can comfort people. It can create community. It can give language to grief, mercy, forgiveness, and hope.

But religion can also be used by power.

That distinction matters.

Sincere faith is not the same thing as religious control. A person can love God and still resist cruelty. A person can believe in Jesus and still question hierarchy. A person can have faith and still refuse to hand their conscience over to a leader, a pastor, a political party, or a man standing at the front of the room claiming authority.

The danger begins when belief is used to stop thought.

When obedience is mistaken for goodness.

When questioning is treated as rebellion.

When compassion is called weakness.

When the rules keep changing, but only in the direction of more control.

That is how a culture can slowly redress people.

Not all at once. Not dramatically. Not with a costume change everyone notices.

Just one layer at a time.

A phrase repeated enough times starts to sound like truth.
A leader excused enough times starts to seem untouchable.
A cruelty defended enough times starts to feel normal.
A contradiction ignored enough times stops feeling like a contradiction.

The same people who say they believe in merit can excuse incompetence when it comes from someone they have chosen to follow.

The same people who say children should not get rewards just for showing up can reward grown leaders simply for belonging to the right side.

The same people who complain that others are being hired for identity can overlook unqualified people when the identity being protected is power.

That is not morality.
That is loyalty dressed up as principle.

And maybe that is what felt so strange to me in that line at the Salvation Army.

I was watching people try on clothes, but I was thinking about all the invisible things people try on too.

A belief.
A role.
A political identity.
A religious certainty.
A version of womanhood.
A version of manhood.
A version of patriotism.
A version of goodness.

Some things we wear because they protect us.

But some things were handed to us before we knew we had a choice.

What system dressed us before we were old enough to understand the room?

That day in the Salvation Army line, nobody was doing anything wrong. People were simply looking for clothes. They were holding things up to their bodies, turning slightly, asking silently whether something fit.

Maybe that is what we all need to do more often.

Not just with shirts and vests and shoes.

But with the beliefs we carry.

Hold them up to the light.

Turn them around.

Ask whether they still fit.

Ask whether they were ever truly ours.

Because people are always being dressed by culture — sometimes in fabric, sometimes in belief, sometimes in fear, sometimes in obedience.

She has often believed that her artwork, her delicately precise sculptures, her beautifully penned writings, and her ability to capture the feeling of small living moments led her nowhere.

Some “help” looks like help but does not truly orient or support. I was not helpful as a parent . I was not taught the consistent skills necessary to navigate this world and I passed that unpracticed skill to my daughters.

A child should not be expected to navigate a school, a family, a road, a store, a hospital, or a court system completely alone.

Someone points.
Someone explains.
Someone translates.
Someone says, “This is where you go. This is what that means. This is what comes next.”

But somewhere along the way, once a person becomes an adult, the world often stops translating. The child, now grown up continues to navigate by instinct, some skill, some luck, mostly without a map . The world keeps turning whether you need it to slow down or not. It keeps turning and turning and we’re trying to just keep up.

It assumes orientation has already happened.
It assumes the person knows how to stand, how to ask, how to apply, how to explain, how to recover, how to belong.

And if that person was never properly oriented in childhood — or was interrupted by trauma, shame, fear, poverty, neglect, or isolation — then adulthood does not feel like freedom.

It feels like being dropped into another system with no map.

Some people are not refusing adulthood. They are stranded between systems.

They did not get to fully be children and know the safe guidance into adulthood.
And now the adult world looks at them and says, “You should know this by now.”

But knowing is not automatic.
Orientation is not automatic.
Confidence is not automatic.
Belonging is not automatic.
These things are built.

The system speaks its own language, keeps its own rhythm, follows rules ordinary people do not understand, then punishes them for not knowing how to move inside it.

And the mental-health system often works the same way.

Children need translation.

Once someone is grown, the world assumes they should already know.

So maybe we stop waiting for the whole system to become humane before we begin.

Children are rarely expected to navigate a system completely alone.

We explain playground rules.
We explain why mushrooms shouldn’t automatically be touched.
We explain how letters become words and words become meaning.

We understand instinctively that orientation matters.

A child who understands why something works moves through the world differently than a child who is only told to obey.

But somewhere along the way, many adult systems stop offering that same orientation.

Instead of guidance, people are handed procedures.
Instead of understanding, paperwork.
Instead of connection, consequences.

And if you struggle inside the structure, the problem slowly begins shifting from the human situation itself to whether you know how to properly navigate the system surrounding it.

It is difficult to explain what it feels like to walk into a system already speaking a language you were never taught.

Legal words.
Procedures.
Timelines.
Expectations.

Everyone else seems to understand where to stand, when to speak, which forms matter, which phrases carry weight.

And if you hesitate—even for a moment—you begin feeling as though the problem is not your situation, but your inability to fluently operate inside the structure itself.

The focus quietly shifts.

Not:

“What is happening to this family?”

But:

“Do these people know how to properly function inside this system?”

Without a lawyer, the legal system can begin feeling strangely “members only.”

This weekend, it started with something small.

We had just returned from the library and were walking up the driveway toward the house when my grandson, six years old, stopped beside my car.

And maybe adults are not so different.

Maybe the systems around us only begin making sense when we are finally allowed to slow down long enough to see how the pieces connect.

We didn’t teach faster this weekend.

We simply stopped rushing long enough for understanding to begin forming.

What I’m seeing now

When time is limited, understanding is often the first thing to go.

There isn’t space to talk through the day.
To connect one moment to the next.
To make sense of what’s happening.

So what fills that space instead is behavior.

Quick adjustments.
Surface responses.
Getting through the moment.

And behavior can look fine…

even when the child is completely unsure underneath.

The pattern doesn’t stop

And this pattern doesn’t stop with children.

It follows us into adulthood—
into workplaces, communities, and systems of leadership.

You can see it in the way people stand quietly,
follow along,
and rarely question what they don’t fully understand.

Why this matters

Because when understanding is missing, control takes its place.

Rules replace meaning.
Silence replaces questions.

And people learn to move through systems
without ever really knowing where they are.

There’s a moment when a child enters something they don’t understand…
not knowing where to look, what connects, or how the pieces fit.

A child doesn’t walk into school thinking:

• “It’s Tuesday.”

• “Lunch is at 11:30.”

• “Follow the system.”

They’re experiencing something closer to:

• Where am I?

• What is happening?

• How do I know what comes next?

That’s not defiance.

That’s disorientation.

I saw it the first day I left my daughter at school.

When lunchtime came, she was told to sit alone at an empty table because she had brought her lunch instead of buying one.

Around her, adults moved quickly—lining kids up, directing them, managing the flow.

But no one explained anything to her.

No one mapped the space.
No one showed her where she fit.

I saw it again when my son started school.

This time, I was there.

And because I was there, I could see what I hadn’t been able to see before.

The same pattern—just dressed a little differently.

At lunch, a woman approached the table and told the children they had “20 minutes left.”

Twenty minutes means nothing to a five-year-old who hasn’t been taught how to read time.

She didn’t introduce herself.
She didn’t explain what came next.

She just gave instructions.

When she returned, she told them to get up, throw away their trays, and follow her.

And they started to.

Until one little boy stopped and said:

👉 “Why are we following her? We don’t even know who she is.”

That was the clearest thinking in the room.

When I repeated what he said, the adult pointed to her badge.

And I remember saying:

This isn’t about one teacher.

Time is the first system we impose on children.

And it’s the first one we don’t explain.

It’s just a series of moments that feel:

• controlling

• overwhelming

So what do we do?

We start with:

• rules

• expectations

• correction

And without ever saying it out loud, the message becomes:

We assume children should adapt to systems.

Give them anchors…

before expectations.

Because when you don’t…

You don’t create discipline.

You create confusion that looks like disobedience.

There’s a moment in any system
when things start to move faster than people can follow.

It doesn’t look like failure.

It looks like progress.

Movement.
Momentum.
Acceleration.

When speed outruns understanding,
the structure doesn’t fail immediately.

It weakens first.

People can be holding the same structure…and feel completely different levels of weight.

Nobody thinks they’re lying.

They’re reacting to where they’re standing under the structure.

That’s the part that’s easy to miss.

Because from the outside, everything still appears to be working.

In fact, it can look like it’s working better than ever.

Faster results.
Quicker answers.
More output.

And that’s where the tension begins.

Not because something is breaking…
but because something is being pushed beyond what it can sustain.

We’re seeing that now in the systems we’re building.

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly.

Faster than most people can fully understand.

Some are excited by it.

Some are uneasy.

Some are trying to keep up.

But underneath that speed,
the same principles still apply.

Clarity matters.
Balance matters.
Understanding matters.

We have a tendency to compress time.

To take processes that unfold over years, generations, or longer…
and reduce them into something quicker, simpler, easier to understand.

But the systems we depend on don’t actually work that way.

Soil takes time.
Ecosystems take time.
Understanding takes time.

Even the way we explain where we come from often shortens what was a long, layered process into something much smaller and more immediate.

And when we start to believe those compressed versions…
we begin to think we can speed everything up without consequence.

But time isn’t just a backdrop.

It’s part of the structure.

And when we try to remove it—
to accelerate beyond what systems can absorb—
we don’t eliminate the process.

We disrupt it.

And strangely, the same system that’s accelerating everything…
is also asking us to slow down.

To think more clearly.

To choose our words more carefully.

To be precise about what we mean.

It’s exciting.

But it also asks for restraint.

Restraint isn’t the opposite of progress.

It’s part of what makes progress sustainable.

Without it, systems don’t stabilize.

They stretch.

They strain.

They begin to lose the quiet supports that were holding them together.

You don’t see it right away.

But you feel it.

In the uncertainty.
In the questions.
In the sense that things are moving faster than they’re being understood.

And that’s where the real work is.

Not in stopping progress.

But in learning how to move with it
without breaking the structure that supports it.

There are parts of a structure you notice right away—arches, columns, beams.
And then there are parts you don’t notice at all.

The quiet ones.
The ones holding everything together without asking for attention.

The strongest parts of a system are often the ones no one sees.

There was a generation that understood this without needing to explain it.

They maintained what they had.

We’ve looked beneath the floorboards — now we turn toward the faces that perform above them.

Hanging at the edge of the curtain are two masks.
One smiles — all charm and confidence, polished and inviting.

Every system wears a mask.
Corporations wear theirs through slogans: Building a Better Future. Empowering Communities. Doing Well by Doing Good.
Platforms wear theirs through algorithms that smile back — curated, colorful, and convenient.
Politicians wear theirs through performance: “We’re protecting you.” “We’re fighting for freedom.”

But the mask that smiles is often only the front half of the story.

Behind it, spreadsheets are rewritten, legal definitions adjusted, loopholes widened — and the losses we thought were “shared” are quietly repurposed into tunnels of escape.

The smiling mask tells us, “We’re reinvesting in America.”
The grimacing one signs the paperwork that moves profits offshore.
It’s a choreography of concealment — one expression facing the public, the other facing the ledger.

It’s a magician’s trick as old as theater itself: keep the audience laughing, angry, or inspired — just don’t let them look at your hands.

The smiling mask performs unity while the grimacing one tallies division.
Platforms amplify conflict because conflict sells attention.
The more fragmented the audience, the safer the structure above them.

We call this “choice” or “freedom,” but it’s closer to captivation.

The Undercover Maneuvers

Sometimes the escape tunnels are written into laws that pass at midnight.
Sometimes they hide in mergers that promise jobs but end with layoffs and price hikes.
Sometimes they’re written in the terms of service we agree to without reading — traded privacy, behavioral data, quiet consent.

Years ago, my oldest daughter, and I walked into the Contemporary Arts Museum here in Houston. Just inside the entrance, across from the doors, was a giant chalkboard covering nearly an entire wall.

It wasn’t graffiti. It was something different.

Visitors had been invited to leave a thought behind. The board was filled with phrases, fragments, and ideas—little traces of the minds that had passed through the museum that day. Some were playful, some reflective, some curious. Nothing crude or hateful. It felt more like a wall of wandering thoughts than anything else.

Daughter stood there reading for a moment and then turned to me.

“What should we write?”

I’ve always been someone who flips through books looking for a line that stands out—something that catches my attention and stays with me. Somewhere along the way I must have come across these words, because they came to mind in that moment as if they had been waiting there.

I said, “Write this.”

Words move minds.

So she picked up the chalk and wrote it on the board.

I don’t know if I ever took a picture of it. I might have. I’ve been thinking about going back through my photos to see if I captured that moment. But even if I didn’t, the memory stayed with me.

At the time, it just felt like one thought among many on a wall of passing ideas.

I didn’t realize then how true those words would turn out to be.

Years later, those words came back to me in an unexpected way.

This same daughter recently sent me a song called Letters From the Sky and asked me to listen closely to the lyrics. Music, for her, is a language for feelings she struggles to explain in ordinary conversation.

The song is beautiful, but it lives in a particular emotional space. It speaks about regret, unfinished conversations, and the longing to say things that were never spoken while there was still time. The voice in the song imagines messages coming from the sky—letters filled with everything that might have been said if life had unfolded differently.

Listening to it felt a little like being invited to step into a certain kind of house.

Some houses are places of rest. Others are places where sorrow has been carefully preserved, room by room, so that the past never quite loosens its grip.

Songs, stories, and even the words we repeat to ourselves can build those houses in the mind. They shape the emotional worlds we live inside. Sometimes they help us understand our past. Other times they quietly invite us to keep living inside it.

That realization brought me back to the people who shaped my own relationship with memory.

The longer I live, the more I see how true those four words really are.

Words don’t just communicate ideas. They shape the landscapes we live inside.

The books we read, the stories we repeat, the songs we return to—these things create emotional terrain. Some landscapes invite us to walk forward. Others lead us back again and again to the same place.

Growing up, I lived inside a landscape shaped largely by my mother’s memories.

She was deeply interested in family history, but the way she carried it often felt heavy. Much of what she wrote in her diaries focused on the tragedies she had experienced. Reading those pages felt less like learning history and more like stepping into a room where sorrow had been carefully preserved.

It was difficult to see her past without also seeing her as a tragic figure moving through the present.

My grandmother, however, was different.

She carried the same family history—the same losses, the same stories—but she seemed able to hold it without letting it define the emotional atmosphere around her. She was strong, practical, and steady. She took care of details, saved money carefully, and kept life moving forward.

There were tragedies in her history as well. A sister, who had been placed in an asylum at the age of 7 or so, simply because she was deaf. A baby brother who lived less than a year before disappearing from the family story except for a small letter written by a tiny little girl, (my grandmother) that still survives though little Walter disappeared. There were photographs she once tried to throw away—images my mother managed to rescue.

History was present, but it did not become a house where everyone had to live inside the sorrow.

My brother , who spent more time around our grandmother growing up, seemed to absorb that perspective. He developed a strong interest in history itself—the context, the facts, the way events fit into the wider world. But he had little patience for conversations that tried to turn history into endless emotional introspection.

In many ways, I find myself standing somewhere between those two ways of remembering.

I understand the importance of knowing where we come from. But I also know how easily memory can turn into a place where we remain too long.

Lately I’ve been thinking about emotional landscapes in a more literal way—how the paths people walk through in their lives might be represented as physical landscapes. Our inner worlds are not static. They are paths we walk.

And the words we use—whether spoken, written, or sung—help shape the direction of those paths.

Some words open doors. Others close them. Some invite us to step forward. Others encourage us to sit down and stay in the past.

The best we can do is choose our words carefully.

Because the words we leave behind—on chalkboards, in songs, in stories—do more than express what we feel. They help build the emotional landscapes that others may someday walk through.

And if we are thoughtful, the people who come after us may see those doors standing open and decide to walk through them too.

In those days, when something important broke, people tried to understand it before they replaced it.

When I look at this photograph, I see more than a damaged airplane.

I see a generation that understood how things worked because they had to repair them.

My grandfather trained pilots in Central Texas and repaired aircraft that others might have written off as lost. My father later rebuilt damaged cars the same way — taking something broken, studying how it worked, and putting it back together piece by piece.

They may not have called it “systems thinking,” but that’s exactly what it was.

If something failed, the goal wasn’t to replace it.

The goal was to understand it.

I sometimes wonder what might have been different if more of us had learned systems that way — not just with machines, but with homes, communities, and even families.

When I look at these old photographs of airplanes that crashed and were rebuilt, I’m reminded of something simple: systems fail sometimes, and the people who know how things work don’t panic—they start looking for how to repair them.

Families are a little like that too. Distance happens, misunderstandings happen, life pulls people in different directions. Sometimes we don’t know how to fix those systems right away.

Systems only survive when people understand how they work and care enough to maintain them.

What those earlier generations understood about machines is something we sometimes forget about systems in general.

Airplanes, engines, houses, and tools only keep working when someone understands how the pieces fit together.

When something fails, the goal isn’t panic or blame.
The goal is to understand the system well enough to repair it.

The same principle quietly applies to larger systems too — including the ones that hold a country together.

Democracies aren’t sustained by personalities or slogans.
They survive when ordinary people understand how the system works and care enough to maintain it.

Like any complex machine, when the maintenance stops, problems begin to appear.

If any of my children or grandchildren ever read these posts someday, I hope they understand something about where they come from. The people in these photographs believed that when something important breaks, you don’t throw it away—you try to repair it.

Conversations with AI

After writing about the custody situation in the last post, something kept sitting in the back of my mind.

When adults look at a conflict like that, we see courts, judges, hearings, legal procedures, and rules that shape what can happen next.

But children don’t see any of that.

They only see what is right in front of them.

They see the adults they love.
They see confusion.
They see separation.
And they wonder why things are happening the way they are.

To a child, the system behind the situation is invisible.

That realization made me think about something bigger.

Children spend their entire early life surrounded by systems they don’t yet understand.

The legal system.
The school system.
The grocery store.
The way food arrives in the house.
The way parents leave for work each morning.
Even the way a city works or how rules exist at all.

To a child, these things can feel random.

But they aren’t random.

They are systems.

And the truth is, most adults were never really taught to see those systems either.

We simply learned to move through them.

Which raises an interesting question:

What if we started teaching children to notice systems much earlier?

Not through lectures or civics textbooks.

But through the ordinary things they already experience every day.

Going to the grocery store.
Planting something in the garden.
Watching how a house is maintained.
Seeing how tools are used and cared for.

These small, everyday moments are actually the first place system thinking begins.

Children don’t need to understand government yet.

But they can begin to understand something simpler and more powerful:

Things work because someone understands how the system works.

Looking back, that is something I wish I had understood earlier when my own children were young.

Not in the form of lectures.
Not as rules written on a wall.

Just helping them notice how things actually work.

I wish someone had done that for me too.

When I think about the people who came closest to teaching it, it wasn’t through formal lessons. It was through the older people in my family — grandparents and relatives who had grown up in a different time.

They knew how to care for things.

Tools were cleaned and put back in their place.
Broken things were repaired instead of thrown away.
Objects were kept long enough that they were sometimes passed down from one generation to the next.

Without realizing it, they were teaching something important.

They were showing us how systems are maintained.

Today, children often spend less time around those older generations. And many of us, myself included, grew up without fully learning those habits in a way we could pass along clearly.

When I look around my own house now, I can see the result of that gap.

A house itself is a system.

But when there are unfinished repairs, tools scattered in different places, or parts of projects sitting around waiting to be finished, the system starts to feel chaotic instead of working smoothly.

I recognize that feeling in my own life sometimes — moving from one task to another, trying to fix one thing here and another thing there.

Looking back, I can see that if someone had shown me earlier how to think in terms of systems — how spaces, tools, maintenance, and routines all connect — things might have felt very different.

But there is a hopeful side to that realization.

Because it means it’s never too late to start showing the next generation how systems actually work.

Things work because someone understands how the system works.

When I think about where I first saw that kind of understanding, my mind goes back to my grandparents and my father.

My grandfather ran a small airport in Austin, Texas called Haile Airport where he trained pilots and rebuilt damaged aircraft.

Granddad treated his tools with respect. Everything had a place. Nothing rusted. Nothing was left scattered around.

My grandparents didn’t keep things because they couldn’t let go of them.

They kept things because they knew how to care for them.

There’s an important difference between those two ideas.

Earlier generations often saved objects because they understood how those objects fit into a working system. Glass jars stored nails and bolts. Tools were cleaned and oiled so they wouldn’t rust. Things were repaired, reused, and sometimes passed down.

Today we often see something different.

Homes filling with objects that no longer serve a purpose. Containers designed so they can’t easily be reused. Products made to be replaced instead of repaired.

What once was stewardship can start to look like clutter when the knowledge of how to maintain a system disappears.

When the knowledge of how things work fades, objects stop being tools and start becoming clutter.

Understanding that difference is part of learning how systems actually work.

My father did something similar with cars. He would buy wrecked cars at a discount and rebuild them. He served in the Airforce and developed the same sense of respect for place and tools . His garage was meticulously clean and organized no matter the project.

My first car came from one of those projects — a black 1965 Pontiac Bonneville with a red interior. It was long and loud and a little bit wild. The kind of car that made other drivers pull up next to you at a stoplight just to see what it could do.

But what stayed with me wasn’t the car itself.

It was the idea that something broken could be understood, repaired, and brought back to life.

Without realizing it, the older people in my family were teaching something important.

They were showing how systems are cared for.

Today many children spend less time around older generations who worked that way. And many of us — myself included — grew up without fully learning how to pass those habits on.

Looking back now, I wish I had spent more time helping my children simply notice how things work.

Not politics.

Not complicated ideas.

Just the systems we interact with every day.

A grocery store.
A garden.
A house.
Tools.
A car.
