Years ago, my oldest daughter, and I walked into the Contemporary Arts Museum here in Houston. Just inside the entrance, across from the doors, was a giant chalkboard covering nearly an entire wall.

It wasn’t graffiti. It was something different.

Visitors had been invited to leave a thought behind. The board was filled with phrases, fragments, and ideas—little traces of the minds that had passed through the museum that day. Some were playful, some reflective, some curious. Nothing crude or hateful. It felt more like a wall of wandering thoughts than anything else.

Daughter stood there reading for a moment and then turned to me.

“What should we write?”

I’ve always been someone who flips through books looking for a line that stands out—something that catches my attention and stays with me. Somewhere along the way I must have come across these words, because they came to mind in that moment as if they had been waiting there.

I said, “Write this.”

Words move minds.

So she picked up the chalk and wrote it on the board.

I don’t know if I ever took a picture of it. I might have. I’ve been thinking about going back through my photos to see if I captured that moment. But even if I didn’t, the memory stayed with me.

At the time, it just felt like one thought among many on a wall of passing ideas.

I didn’t realize then how true those words would turn out to be.

Years later, those words came back to me in an unexpected way.

This same daughter recently sent me a song called Letters From the Sky and asked me to listen closely to the lyrics. Music, for her, is a language for feelings she struggles to explain in ordinary conversation.

The song is beautiful, but it lives in a particular emotional space. It speaks about regret, unfinished conversations, and the longing to say things that were never spoken while there was still time. The voice in the song imagines messages coming from the sky—letters filled with everything that might have been said if life had unfolded differently.

Listening to it felt a little like being invited to step into a certain kind of house.

Some houses are places of rest. Others are places where sorrow has been carefully preserved, room by room, so that the past never quite loosens its grip.

Songs, stories, and even the words we repeat to ourselves can build those houses in the mind. They shape the emotional worlds we live inside. Sometimes they help us understand our past. Other times they quietly invite us to keep living inside it.

That realization brought me back to the people who shaped my own relationship with memory.

The longer I live, the more I see how true those four words really are.

Words don’t just communicate ideas. They shape the landscapes we live inside.

The books we read, the stories we repeat, the songs we return to—these things create emotional terrain. Some landscapes invite us to walk forward. Others lead us back again and again to the same place.

Growing up, I lived inside a landscape shaped largely by my mother’s memories.

She was deeply interested in family history, but the way she carried it often felt heavy. Much of what she wrote in her diaries focused on the tragedies she had experienced. Reading those pages felt less like learning history and more like stepping into a room where sorrow had been carefully preserved.

It was difficult to see her past without also seeing her as a tragic figure moving through the present.

My grandmother, however, was different.

She carried the same family history—the same losses, the same stories—but she seemed able to hold it without letting it define the emotional atmosphere around her. She was strong, practical, and steady. She took care of details, saved money carefully, and kept life moving forward.

There were tragedies in her history as well. A sister, who had been placed in an asylum at the age of 7 or so, simply because she was deaf. A baby brother who lived less than a year before disappearing from the family story except for a small letter written by a tiny little girl, (my grandmother) that still survives though little Walter disappeared. There were photographs she once tried to throw away—images my mother managed to rescue.

History was present, but it did not become a house where everyone had to live inside the sorrow.

My brother , who spent more time around our grandmother growing up, seemed to absorb that perspective. He developed a strong interest in history itself—the context, the facts, the way events fit into the wider world. But he had little patience for conversations that tried to turn history into endless emotional introspection.

In many ways, I find myself standing somewhere between those two ways of remembering.

I understand the importance of knowing where we come from. But I also know how easily memory can turn into a place where we remain too long.

Lately I’ve been thinking about emotional landscapes in a more literal way—how the paths people walk through in their lives might be represented as physical landscapes. Our inner worlds are not static. They are paths we walk.

And the words we use—whether spoken, written, or sung—help shape the direction of those paths.

Some words open doors. Others close them. Some invite us to step forward. Others encourage us to sit down and stay in the past.

The best we can do is choose our words carefully.

Because the words we leave behind—on chalkboards, in songs, in stories—do more than express what we feel. They help build the emotional landscapes that others may someday walk through.

And if we are thoughtful, the people who come after us may see those doors standing open and decide to walk through them too.

In those days, when something important broke, people tried to understand it before they replaced it.

When I look at this photograph, I see more than a damaged airplane.

I see a generation that understood how things worked because they had to repair them.

My grandfather trained pilots in Central Texas and repaired aircraft that others might have written off as lost. My father later rebuilt damaged cars the same way — taking something broken, studying how it worked, and putting it back together piece by piece.

They may not have called it “systems thinking,” but that’s exactly what it was.

If something failed, the goal wasn’t to replace it.

The goal was to understand it.

I sometimes wonder what might have been different if more of us had learned systems that way — not just with machines, but with homes, communities, and even families.

When I look at these old photographs of airplanes that crashed and were rebuilt, I’m reminded of something simple: systems fail sometimes, and the people who know how things work don’t panic—they start looking for how to repair them.

Families are a little like that too. Distance happens, misunderstandings happen, life pulls people in different directions. Sometimes we don’t know how to fix those systems right away.

Systems only survive when people understand how they work and care enough to maintain them.

What those earlier generations understood about machines is something we sometimes forget about systems in general.

Airplanes, engines, houses, and tools only keep working when someone understands how the pieces fit together.

When something fails, the goal isn’t panic or blame.
The goal is to understand the system well enough to repair it.

The same principle quietly applies to larger systems too — including the ones that hold a country together.

Democracies aren’t sustained by personalities or slogans.

After writing about the custody situation in the last post, something kept sitting in the back of my mind.

When adults look at a conflict like that, we see courts, judges, hearings, legal procedures, and rules that shape what can happen next.

But children don’t see any of that.

They only see what is right in front of them.

They see the adults they love.
They see confusion.
They see separation.
And they wonder why things are happening the way they are.

To a child, the system behind the situation is invisible.

That realization made me think about something bigger.

Children spend their entire early life surrounded by systems they don’t yet understand.

The legal system.
The school system.
The grocery store.
The way food arrives in the house.
The way parents leave for work each morning.
Even the way a city works or how rules exist at all.

To a child, these things can feel random.

But they aren’t random.

They are systems.

And the truth is, most adults were never really taught to see those systems either.

We simply learned to move through them.

Which raises an interesting question:

What if we started teaching children to notice systems much earlier?

Not through lectures or civics textbooks.

But through the ordinary things they already experience every day.

Going to the grocery store.
Planting something in the garden.
Watching how a house is maintained.
Seeing how tools are used and cared for.

Children don’t need to understand government yet.

When I look around my own house now, I can see the result of that gap.

A house itself is a system.

But when there are unfinished repairs, tools scattered in different places, or parts of projects sitting around waiting to be finished, the system starts to feel chaotic instead of working smoothly.

I recognize that feeling in my own life sometimes — moving from one task to another, trying to fix one thing here and another thing there.

Looking back, I can see that if someone had shown me earlier how to think in terms of systems — how spaces, tools, maintenance, and routines all connect — things might have felt very different.

But there is a hopeful side to that realization.

Because it means it’s never too late to start showing the next generation how systems actually work.

Things work because someone understands how the system works.

When I think about where I first saw that kind of understanding, my mind goes back to my grandparents and my father.

My grandfather ran a small airport in Austin, Texas called Haile Airport where he trained pilots and rebuilt damaged aircraft.

Granddad treated his tools with respect. Everything had a place. Nothing rusted. Nothing was left scattered around.

My grandparents didn’t keep things because they couldn’t let go of them.

They kept things because they knew how to care for them.

There’s an important difference between those two ideas.

Earlier generations often saved objects because they understood how those objects fit into a working system. Glass jars stored nails and bolts. Tools were cleaned and oiled so they wouldn’t rust. Things were repaired, reused, and sometimes passed down.

Today we often see something different.

Homes filling with objects that no longer serve a purpose. Containers designed so they can’t easily be reused. Products made to be replaced instead of repaired.

What once was stewardship can start to look like clutter when the knowledge of how to maintain a system disappears.

When the knowledge of how things work fades, objects stop being tools and start becoming clutter.

Understanding that difference is part of learning how systems actually work.

My father did something similar with cars. He would buy wrecked cars at a discount and rebuild them. He served in the Airforce and developed the same sense of respect for place and tools . His garage was meticulously clean and organized no matter the project.

My first car came from one of those projects — a black 1965 Pontiac Bonneville with a red interior. It was long and loud and a little bit wild. The kind of car that made other drivers pull up next to you at a stoplight just to see what it could do.

But what stayed with me wasn’t the car itself.

It was the idea that something broken could be understood, repaired, and brought back to life.

Without realizing it, the older people in my family were teaching something important.

They were showing how systems are cared for.

Today many children spend less time around older generations who worked that way. And many of us — myself included — grew up without fully learning how to pass those habits on.

Looking back now, I wish I had spent more time helping my children simply notice how things work.

Not politics.

Not complicated ideas.

Just the systems we interact with every day.

A grocery store.
A garden.
A house.
Tools.
A car.

Someone strong will fix everything. Someone bad is ruining everything.

But when we step back and look closely, we begin to see something else:

Advertising learned something decades ago.

Repeat a message often enough and it starts to feel familiar.
And familiar begins to feel true.

Politics sometimes uses the same trick.

Slogans and narratives get repeated until they become the framework people use to interpret everything else.

Civic literacy interrupts that cycle.

When you understand how institutions work—
how laws move,
what offices actually control,
and where power is limited—

the repetition loses its grip.

The noise fades.

The structure underneath becomes visible.

Games make systems visible and interesting.

People willingly spend hours learning rules, maps, characters, and strategies in a game—but when the same idea appears in government, it’s presented like a dry civics lecture.

What If We Looked at Government the Way People Learn Games?

Think about how people approach a popular online game.

Nobody just jumps in and randomly presses buttons.

Players quickly start asking practical questions:

• What are the rules of the game?

• What does each character actually do?

• Where are the obstacles?

• What moves gain points and which ones cost you?

• Who has special abilities and who doesn’t?

Players study the map.
They learn the environment.
They learn what actions actually change the outcome.

And the players who understand the system best usually win.

Now imagine if citizens approached government the same way.

Instead of asking only:

“Do I like this candidate?”

People might start asking:

• What powers does this office actually have?

• What part of the system does this person control?

• Who else can block or influence those decisions?

• What part of the process actually moves the result?

Suddenly politics stops looking like a story about heroes.

It starts looking like a system with rules, roles, and constraints.

Just like a game.

Why This Matters

In games, players know something important:

The character may look impressive, but the environment and rules of the game determine what is possible.

Government works the same way: the rules matter more than the characters

A leader can promise almost anything.

Women carry the weight—daily, hourly, without applause—and are still told they’re less.

True strength isn’t loud.
It doesn’t need to perform.
It steadies what matters—
Even when the weight is never evenly distributed.

This is what women do every day.
Not because it's easy.
But because someone has to carry what others won’t even see.

This morning at the post office, I watched an Hispanic woman trying to arrange passports while juggling twin toddlers on wrist leashes and a baby in a stroller. She barely spoke English and spent nearly an hour calming the children, managing the paperwork, and holding the whole process together while no one offered help. one of her little toddlers came up to me as though he knew me. Held my hand, rubbed his head on my stomach like a kitten snuggling. he was completely unafraid. I talked to him and gently shook hands with him. it was very surreal and sweet.

There is another woman close to my heart who struggles daily to juggle her children’s well-being, a full-time job, medical issues for her children, special needs at school, daycare expense, sleep, groceries, and a second job landscaping when the children are with their dad, all just to make sure her children have what they need to succeed.

Mothers live this reality daily.

Navigating constant threats to their children’s well-being—from fathers who want to exert control through fear . Fathers who want ownership as a “Father” without doing the extensive work necessary for the well-being of their children.

many mothers know that if they push back too hard,
the father’s anger will land on the children.
So they stay silent—not for themselves, but to shield their children.
While he speaks freely, acts selfishly, and sees the children not as individuals to protect, but as property to control.

This is the real narrative that hides behind the banner of “family values.”
This is what the far right—what Christian nationalists—praise as a “value-based” initiative.

But look closely at those values.

What’s being protected isn’t family.
It’s masculine ego.

What’s being enforced isn’t order.
It’s obedience through fear.

And what’s being honored isn’t strength.
It’s a performance of strength used to hide cowardice.

The value is skewed toward a masculinity portrayed by men—and sometimes monsters—as domination, threat, and coercion. Not to protect country, or people, or even family…

…but to protect themselves.

And still—women endure.

✦ Pointed Observation:

This isn’t just about deadbeat dads. It’s about the ritual of male exemption.
The forgotten water bottles.
The unanswered school calls.
The shrugged-off doctor appointments.
The full family entourage required just to do the one thing a woman is expected to do alone, with grace, and while smiling.

It takes courage, tenacity, patience, and endurance for mothers to care for children in America, a country that now supports men who pretend to honor motherhood while refusing to support it. A handful of men do see the truth. Most still do not.

The Repetition is the religion repeated:

Tell women they’re made to do it all,
then call them emotional, fragile, or weak
when they collapse under the weight of it.

In a world where masculinity is praised for control, stoicism, and physical dominance, we’ve overlooked the kind of strength it takes to soothe a fever, pack a lunch, advocate at a school, hold down a job, and do it all again tomorrow.

This isn’t fragility.
This is endurance—on repeat.

What’s repeated isn’t always what’s right.
In too many homes, the default is this:
Men forget. Women remember.
Men drop off. Women pick up.
Men excuse. Women endure.

instead of cared for.

Masculinity is often measured in muscles and money.
But strength is being the one who remembers the immunization record.
Strength is packing snacks, planning for meltdowns, and still showing up.
Strength is holding everyone’s schedule in your head while being told you’re too emotional to lead.

Critical thinking and mental multitasking take work.
Following a script is easier than doing the deep emotional labor
required to truly lead, nurture, or grow.

Men who refuse to recognize this—
who wall off their minds into tidy compartments—
aren’t displaying strength.
They’re revealing fear.

They are the weak link in human progress.

Their power comes from exploiting love and care—
treating it as a weakness to be abused or diminished.
But women refuse to sell out.

Even through exhaustion,
even when pushed into choosing between dead-end options—
options that rarely allow the freedom to pursue joy—
women persist.

There is an interesting irony in the current authoritarianism that is taking away the Democracy that was making this country so great! The irony is in the prideful public displays of artificial masculinity . Today it is easier to recognize the performers and the fakes in society. Those folks who reveal themselves through words and sometimes apparel.. Beneath their superficial surfaces there is nothing of substance to offer. And women and men can now more easily recognize the danger and leave those toxic people to revel alone in the echo chambers of their own making.

I feel that AI is the equalizer for women and the less educated.

We can now choose better partners, better friends, and a better future before it is all chosen for us by people who wish for an artificial unsustainable mediocre society.

🤖 Enter AI, the New Scribe

Artificial intelligence is not a sword. It doesn’t conquer land. It doesn’t fire weapons. But it’s doing something more subtle—and possibly more enduring:

It’s learning how humans think, speak, fear, and repeat.

Just like the Brahmins once guarded sacred knowledge, AI is being trained on our scriptures, our speeches, our patterns, and our emotions. It shapes what we see. It anticipates what we’ll say next.

And yet, those who claim to be resisting control—those in the mega-party who style themselves as warriors, rebels, and defenders—are often the ones most controlled by language, by repetition, by slogans that act more like rituals than reason.

🔂 Slogans as Secular Scripture

• “Woke is evil.”

• “They’re coming for your children.”

• “Make America Great Again.”

• “Only two genders.”

• “Don’t tread on me.”

These are not arguments. They are incantations. Repeated enough, they become truth—not because they were discovered, but because they were heard loud and often enough to silence questioning.

Like a prayer repeated five times a day, these slogans root themselves in identity. And identity, once it is fully constructed by words, becomes a kind of armor far stronger than steel—and far harder to pierce.

⚔️ When the Warrior Becomes a Puppet

The cruel irony:
Those who rage against "elites" and "manipulators" often speak with voices not their own. They believe they are resisting control, but they’re performing scripts—scripts written by media barons, political strategists, and now, increasingly, predictive algorithms.

They hate “wokeness,” but “woke” is just a word. What they truly fear is the reordering of power—where compassion, nuance, and reflection replace aggression, domination, and control.

They fight with shields and memes, unaware that the sword they brandish was handed to them, inscribed with someone else's spell.

🌊 A New Flow of Power

Just as the priests once chanted what only they could read, AI now writes what the world will see. The battle has moved again—from fields of blood to fields of data.

But this time, the outcome is not yet decided.

We can still choose who holds the pen.
We can still ask who is writing the script—and who is reading it aloud without even knowing.

So for the next ten days, I’ll be exploring that idea:
How repetition—through media, politics, fear, and slogans—is shaping belief and behavior more than people realize.
