A Presence of Mind—Day 64
I was looking at a third-grade workbook once, and at the top of the page it said:
“Every story has a character with a problem to solve.”
It was simple—but it stayed with me.
Because what happens when the character doesn’t even know what the problem is?
In Day 63, I wrote about how children are dropped into systems without anchors.
They aren’t resisting. They’re disoriented.
And what happens next is something we don’t talk about enough.
Eventually, most children do learn to follow.
But following is not the same as understanding.
Before they can follow a system, children try to understand it.
Compliance is not understanding
Children learn quickly how to behave inside a system:
when to sit
when to be quiet
when to raise their hand
how to watch others and adjust
They learn how to avoid getting in trouble.
But that doesn’t mean they understand what’s happening around them.
It means they’ve learned how to move through it.
They’re not learning the system.
They’re learning how to survive inside of it.
What understanding looks like
Understanding looks different.
It’s quieter—but it’s steadier.
It shows up as:
knowing what comes next
recognizing patterns in the day
feeling grounded instead of unsure
being able to ask questions without fear
It’s not just behavior.
It’s clarity.
What I’m seeing now
When time is limited, understanding is often the first thing to go.
There isn’t space to talk through the day.
To connect one moment to the next.
To make sense of what’s happening.
So what fills that space instead is behavior.
Quick adjustments.
Surface responses.
Getting through the moment.
And behavior can look fine…
even when the child is completely unsure underneath.
The pattern doesn’t stop
And this pattern doesn’t stop with children.
It follows us into adulthood—
into workplaces, communities, and systems of leadership.
You can see it in the way people stand quietly,
follow along,
and rarely question what they don’t fully understand.
Why this matters
Because when understanding is missing, control takes its place.
Rules replace meaning.
Silence replaces questions.
And people learn to move through systems
without ever really knowing where they are.
Closing
A child who understands the system doesn’t need to be controlled by it.
They know where they are.
And that changes everything.
